I am honored to announce that the Gretchen Schultze Young Memorial Prairie has now been installed on Earlham Campus. This 1.75 acre prairie has been several years in the making. It is named in honor of Gretchen Schultze Young, who met her husband John Young while both were Biology majors at Earlham Campus. They have both remained close to Earlham since graduating in 1957 and getting married a few months later. Gretchen abided a love of plants throughout her life and in particular a love of prairie wildflowers. This prairie will quadruple the native prairie land available to Earlham students, will be a major educational and research resource, will promote sustainability, and will beautify campus. The prairie is situated on a hill to the south of Beane Stadium and visible from the bleachers. It adjoins our 10-year-old carbon sequestration forest.
